Caution, Construction Zone

Why did you buy your property for your home or your business? Did it have to do with the beautiful trees surrounding the property? Well if it was then you need a proper construction plan that will protect your trees during construction, so they will continue to thrive after the construction ends. So many people take this for granted, but the easiest way to preserve your trees during construction is to consult an educated, licensed arborist before construction begins.

A consulting arborist should be contacted the moment you decide to build. Some even consult an arborist before they have even drawn up their plans. They do this so that they can ensure the home or business is not going to affect their trees when completed. I have seen people who design whole homes around one beautiful tree, to only have to go back a year or two later and remove the tree. Don’t let this happen to you. Get a game plan before construction begins.

After an arborist has been consulted, the next thing would be to fence off your trees you would like to preserve. Fencing should at least go out as far as the drip line of the tree in question. A sign should be posted warning also workers not to remove fencing or to allow anyone to leave things resting inside the tree fence area. This protects the tree roots from unwanted compaction and more. It is the simplest and easiest way to protect your valued tress during construction.

In some cases, root pruning or air spading may be necessary due to construction occurring too close to the tree. Again an educated, licensed arborist can help you determine if this is needed. Do not allow the construction company to cut any roots with out the proper equipment and with out an arborist over seeing the work or doing the work themselves. The roots are the life line to the tree getting all the nutrients they need to survive. If they are harmed you can create failures and so many other issues. So consult an arborist on whether or not your tree may need air spading or proper root pruning.

As a preventative measure, you should look into tree fertilization. While construction is occurring certain nutrients may have a hard time properly getting to your tree/trees. The construction may also create it’s own set of issues that tree fertilization can help lessen. Trees growing in urban environments have different needs than trees growing in a natural environment, and this is even more intense when a tree is under the stresses of construction in its near by vecinity. In my option proactive tree care is always better than reactive tree care. So get to the root of the problem before construction starts, your tree will be much happier for it after the construction is complete.

All in all, construction around a tree is not a good thing, but with the help of an educated, licensed arborist it is possible to preserve the trees for years to come. Trees are valuable assets to our property and they should always be protected. I understand that construction is a major part of our growing world, but it doesn’t have to be there reason why we lose so many trees. Get help before the construction starts, so that we all can enjoy the trees in our urban environments for years to come.
